David Gage is well known throughout the world for his New York-based David Gage String Instruments shop, where he has been repairing, restoring and selling string basses and cellos since 1978. A former professional upright and electric bassist, David studied string instrument restoration with renowned luthier Charles Traeger, plate vibration with Carleen Hutchins and advanced luthier skills with Lou DiLeone.

Most recently, David has teamed up with designer Ned Steinberger to develop and manufacturer The Realist, a line of transducers for acoustic string instruments. David is also the sole designer of the Gage Case for string bass and cello and of the Czech Ease acoustic road bass.

Gage is an ardent advocate of the International Society of Bassists and serves on its board of directors. He has also written articles on instrument construction and repair for the ISB Journal and has been a columnist for Bass Player magazine.
